How It Works

At the heart of the Series 404 is a robust friction mechanism. During the winding process, compressed air bladders inside the shaft press friction ledges outward against the friction rings. This action applies uniform torque to each ring, which can be fine-tuned by adjusting pneumatic pressure. A diameter sensing system can calculate the ideal pressure and continuously feed it to the shaft, ensuring real-time adjustment as the roll diameter changes.

This design guarantees central clamping of each core by the friction rings and stable tension throughout the process. The required overspeed of the shaft — typically around 3% — maintains web tension effectively. Most importantly, the non-slip grip between the core and friction ring eliminates abrasive dust, a common problem with traditional shafts.

The Series 404 shaft features a chrome-plated steel body with a ground finish, built for durability and precision. Shaft journals are custom-manufactured to customer specifications, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of winding systems.

Standard diameters include 70 mm, 76.2 mm, 150 mm, and 152.4 mm, with intermediate sizes available upon request.
