“EasyDrive” radial piston air motor

Radial piston air motor

In our air motors, we deliberately use the radial piston principle in a highly economical way. The small piston volumes inside the motor consume the least possible amount of compressed air while at the same time generating maximum power from the input energy by relying on expansion. In this way, we are able to reduce compressed-air consumption by up to 90% compared to a vane motor. To meet the requirements of various application areas and industries, we have developed five different versions of our motor.

  • Start/stop and change of rotational direction
  • possible at full load
  • Max. torque available from the start
  • Overload-proof
  • Low operating noise
  • Minimal air consumption with maximum performance
  • Explosion protection certificate according to Directive 94/9/EC (optional)
  • IP67/IP68 and stainless steel housing types (optional)

Maximum performance with minimal consumption! Torque when it really matters
In contrast to conventional air motors, the EasyDrive generates its maximum torque as soon as it starts up. As the speed gets higher, the torque decreases while air consumption increases. The EasyDrive operating principle ensures maximum power output with minimal power input! With appropriate application, this provides another substantial advantage in terms of energy consumption.

Functional principle
The radial piston principle eliminates the need for both connecting rods and crankshafts. The drive pistons – which are arranged in a star configuration – roll along the curve that has been built into the inside of the housing. They are supplied with compressed air from the centre using a rotating control ring and a fixed control shaft. This is what causes the pistons to operate. A floating connection links the control ring to the piston cage disc, which is supported on the control shaft by double bearings. When rotation occurs, the supply air and exhaust air take turns to pressurise and vent the drive pistons respectively. Anti-clockwise or clockwise rotation can be achieved immediately by reversing the supply and exhaust air. In the single-stage version, three of the seven drive pistons are always involved in generating the torque. The drive pistons are forcibly returned and vented at the highest point of the curve. This is equivalent to the operating principle of a single-acting cylinder. As a result, the maximum torque of the motor is available as soon as it starts up. The rollers of the working pistons are made of heavy-duty plastic material and run on double ball bearings. This results in very low friction, thereby minimising rolling noise and ensuring a long service life.

Five performance classes – two sizes
The modular design of the EasyDrive enables compact dimensions to be achieved. There are two sizes, which differ only in diameter. The motors achieve a maximum torque of 450 Ncm / 900 Ncm / 1800 Ncm / 3600 Ncm / 7200 Ncm.

Options
In addition to the mounting holes on the motor cover, an optional mounting flange or mounting bracket is also available. This enables different types of installation in the smallest of spaces. Other options such as the IP68 protection class or a stainless steel motor housing allow installation in harsh environments or even under water. An explosion protection certificate for applications involving potentially explosive environments completes the extensive product range.

EasyDrive gear unit
Our planetary gears have been specially manufactured for the EasyDrive system and can be used as step-down/step-up gearing to adjust the speed and/or torque according to requirements. For this purpose, ratios of 3:1 and 9:1 are available for step-down scenarios, while a ratio of 1:2 is available for step-up. Custom gear ratio spacing is available on request.

FDA-compliant version
The EasyDrive air motors from the PMO-0450 series can be supplied in an FDA-compliant version. The V4A (1.4404) stainless steel housing is electrochemically polished, resulting in micro-deburring across the entire surface. The chromium oxide layer forms a passive protective film against corrosion, a feature that significantly improves the properties of metallic surfaces.
